Tucked behind a gate on Rue de Bretagne in the Marais, the Marché des Enfants Rouges has been operating since 1615, making it the oldest covered market in Paris. Named after an orphanage that once stood nearby where children wore red (rouge) uniforms, the market today is a bustling food hall where vendors from a dozen different cuisines compete for your attention.
Japanese bento boxes, Moroccan tagines, Lebanese mezze, Creole dishes, organic French cheese and charcuterie are all available for eating at communal tables under the glass roof. Arrive between 12:00 and 14:00 to experience it at its most lively. Saturday morning is a food shopping institution for local Marais residents. The market is closed Monday and reduced hours on Sunday.
